IP addresses and ports

An IP address is a number that uniquely identifies every computer on an IP network. IP addresses are 32-bit binary numbers, which means that theoreti- cally, a maximum of something in the neighborhood of 4 billion unique host addresses can exist throughout the Internet.

IP addresses are usually represented in a format known as dotted-decimal notation. In dotted-decimal notation, each group of 8 bits, known as an octet, is represented by its decimal equivalent, as in this example:

192.168.136.28

You usually see IP addresses represented in this format.

Besides having an IP address, you must use a port to access data from a computer over the Internet. The various services that a server computer might provide are assigned well-known port numbers. The port number for the web protocol HTTP, for example, is 80. As a result, a computer that wants to access a web server HTTP must do so over port 80.

Port numbers are often specified with a colon following an IP address. The HTTP service on a server whose IP address is 192.168.10.133 is 192.168.10.133:80.

Literally thousands of established ports are in use. If you need to make up a port number for an application, pick one that’s greater than 49151 but less than 65,535 (the maximum allowable port number). Port numbers above 49151 are available for private use. (You can find a list of commonly used port numbers by searching common IP ports on a search engine such as Google.)
